WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer released the following statement today in response to last week’s attack on a United Nations camp for displaced civilians in South Sudan:

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the attack on Thursday that killed 18 people at a UN camp for displaced civilians in South Sudan. The fighting between factions loyal to President Kiir and former Vice President Machar needs to come to an immediate halt so that negotiations for a political settlement can resume. The targeting of civilians is an egregious human rights violation, and the international community must ensure that those who committed this heinous act are held responsible and brought to justice. I will continue working to advance measures through Congress that encourage a peaceful end to the fighting and help the South Sudanese people secure the better future for which they yearn."
