WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement marking Asian Pacific American Heritage Month:
"During Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, I join in celebrating the innumerable contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to our nation. Although they faced discrimination and exclusion at times, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders came to this country seeking the American Dream and have worked hard to attain it - starting businesses, serving in our military and in government, and succeeding in science, education, sports, and the arts. Throughout the country, AAPI communities are growing and thriving, and Congress has a responsibility to ensure that the families and individuals in those communities have the tools to succeed and make it in America.
"I'm proud to serve in Congress with my colleagues in the Congressional Asian and Pacific American Caucus, led by Congresswoman Judy Chu, who effectively advocates on their behalf in Congress. I thank them for their leadership, and I look forward to continuing to work to advance legislation that encourages the creation of jobs and increases access to opportunity, fixes our broken immigration system, restores voting rights, and ensures access to affordable health care and housing.
"Throughout the month of May, let us celebrate the rich and vibrant heritage of the AAPI community and thank them for all that they do to strengthen and enhance our nation."
