WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for April:

“April’s job report shows our continued economic strength built on what President Obama left to his successor: a combination of declining deficits and robust job growth.  Today, after more than a year of President Trump at the helm, while our unemployment rate is down, the rate of job growth has slowed. Last month saw fewer new private sector jobs created than the prior six Aprils. Wage growth remains unacceptably low, in spite of Republicans’ claims that their tax law would spur massive growth and wage increases. The fact is that Republicans have failed to deliver on their promises, instead laying the foundation for the next economic crisis through a tax law that gives 83% of its benefits to the very wealthy and piles a massive accumulation of debt onto the middle class.

“Democrats are offering Americans a better deal.  We’re fighting to raise wages, create jobs that provide economic security, defend access to affordable health care, make child care and education more affordable, and enable workers to save for homeownership and a secure retirement.  As I’ve traveled on House Democrats’ Make It In America Listening Tour, I’ve heard Americans across the country say the same thing: economic security is slipping away and Washington isn’t helping them.  House Democrats are determined to listen and take action to ensure everyone can make it in America.”
