Hoyer Statement on Anti-LGBT Legislation in Mississippi

WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the enactment of discriminatory, anti-LGBT legislation in Mississippi:  

“The enactment today of the so-called ‘religious freedom’ law in Mississippi gives legal cover to discrimination against LGBT Americans and their families.  These types of laws, while purporting to protect Americans’ constitutional rights, in reality run counter to the very principles that our Constitution enshrines.  Every individual, every married couple, and every family in America deserves to be treated with equal respect and equal dignity.  I will continue speaking out against such laws and supporting efforts to prove them unconstitutional in court.”
