WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today as Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hold a hearing on anti-LGBT legislation. Today marks the one-month anniversary of the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida:
“It is outrageous that Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee would hold a hearing today on legislation that is patently discriminatory and makes a mockery of the First Amendment it purports to defend. Republicans’ bill would make it expressly legal for any entity receiving public funding to deny services against LGBT Americans and their families. That’s wrong, and it’s shameful that Congress would entertain such an idea.
“Just one month after the horrifying attack on an LGBT nightclub in Orlando, to hold a hearing on this legislation is an insult to the memories of those who were lost. House Democrats will continue to stand up for full equality for LGBT Americans and their families and defend the Constitution that guarantees ‘the equal protection of the laws’ to all people in our country. I urge Chairman Chaffetz to scrap this legislation and prevent it from coming to the Floor of the House.”
