WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after meeting with Karen Weaver, the mayor of Flint, Michigan:
"This afternoon, I met with Mayor Weaver and representatives from Flint, Michigan, who are Washington today to urge Congress to act in response to the poisoning of the city’s water supply with lead. It has now been over a year since elevated levels of lead were found in Flint’s public water supply. Thousands of children have been exposed, placing them at a higher risk of health problems as they grow up. The Republican-led Congress ought to stop telling the people of Flint that they are on their own to deal with the fallout from this disaster and work across the aisle to provide Flint with assistance as soon as possible. I thank Mayor Weaver and her team, along with Reps. Kildee, Dingell, Lawrence, Conyers, and Levin, for their steadfast determination to keep this issue at the forefront Congress's attention, and I, along with the entire House Democratic Caucus, will continue to stand with them until this crisis is resolved.”
