WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today recognizing the 50th anniversary of the death of Robert F. Kennedy:
“Today we mark the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, an event that shocked the world and grieved a nation. He was taken from us far too soon, but the example he set through his life of service has inspired countless others to continue his work of lifting people up from hardship and despair. When he visited Capetown, South Africa, on June 5, 1966, he spoke of his faith in the power of every person to change the world, with each act sending a ‘tiny ripple of hope,’ which together ‘build a current that can sweep down the mightiest wall of oppression and resistance.’
“As we continue to fight for the causes he held dear – to eradicate poverty, inequality, and indignity wherever they are found – let us find strength and patience in remembering his lesson that each one of us can make a difference, and let us be guided by the peace of his conviction that the seeds of our better future already rest within our own palms.”
