WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the twentieth anniversary of the signing of the Violence Against Women Act, which is tomorrow:

“Tomorrow marks the twentieth anniversary of the signing of the Violence Against Women Act, landmark legislation to crack down on domestic violence and assist survivors as they seek justice and healing.   I was proud to support passage of this law in 1994 as well as a reauthorization in 2013 that extended new protections to LGBT Americans, immigrants, and Native Americans.

“The Violence Against Women Act was a historic and successful effort to ensure that Congress took action on behalf of survivors, victims’ advocates, and law enforcement.  It is imperative that federal, state, and local officials have all the tools they need to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of partner abuse, stalking, harassment, sexual assault, and other deeply troubling crimes.  House Democrats will continue to push for measures that deter domestic violence and harassment so that millions can feel safer on our streets, in their homes and workplaces, and online to pursue their lives and careers without fear.”
