WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide:

“Today we mark the somber centennial of one of history’s greatest tragedies:  the mass-murder of 1.5 million Armenians, which began with the arrest of 250 journalists, politicians, clergy, and intellectuals on April 24, 1915.  A hundred years after the Armenian genocide occurred, descendents of its survivors in Armenia, the United States, and across the world gather to remember the victims.  I join in observing this solemn day of remembrance, on which everyone ought to reflect on the responsibility we share to stand in defense of the life, liberty, and dignity of every individual.”
