Hoyer Remarks at #StillIn Press Conference with House and Senate Democrats, Climate Leaders

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined a press conference today with House and Senate Democrats and the Center for American Progress, the League of Conservation Voters, MoveOn.org, 350.org, and others to speak out in support of climate action as international leaders meet in Bonn, Germany at the COP23 climate conference. Below is a transcript of his remarks:
"We’re in because it’s the right thing to do. We’re in because it’s common sense. We’re in because we are the leader, notwithstanding the blowing of the trumpet of retreat by Trump. That’s why we’re in.
"Many nations of the world are meeting in Bonn as we speak to participate in the 23rd United Nations Global Conference on Addressing Climate Change. With President Trump’s decision to withdraw, as has been said I’m sure over and over and over again, we’re the only country, we are the outlier. Our President is leading us into irresponsibility as it relates to climate change. That’s why all of us are here today. To say that in spite of President Trump’s decision, we are still in.
“I want to thank Neera Tanden, and all of those that work for the Center for American Progress for bringing us here.
"No one, no one can reasonably deny that our climate is changing, and creating new dangers and uncertainties that impact economics, global security, and, as Rep. Don McEachin said, 'vulnerable populations.'
“The march to a clean energy economy is here. It cannot, it must not, it will not be stopped. Why? Because it’s the right thing to do for the health of our children and the health of our planet. It is in everyone’s interest; Democrats, Republicans, businesses, workers, everybody – to address climate change in a responsible and significant way.
"John Kennedy was talking about children who were suffering from disabilities, and he said 'although these children are the victims of fate, they shall not be the victims of our neglect.'
“The health of our global community must not be hindered by our neglect. We’re all in. God Bless.”
