WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) delivered remarks today at a press conference where House Democrats announced a discharge petition to force a vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would prohibit employer discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Below is a transcript of his remarks as prepared for delivery:
“As Thomas Jefferson, and those who wrote with him said, ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident.’ What we have found throughout history is, it may be self-evident, but it is not self-executed. That is why this legislation is necessary.
“Certainly, the pursuit of happiness means having the ability to have a job, support yourself, and support your family based upon your abilities, your character, and your willingness to work – not any other artificial distinction that does not matter in terms of performance on a job.
“America was founded on the principles of tolerance and non-discrimination. It’s shameful that Americans can still be legally discriminated against in the workplace because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. We cannot choose who we love or who we are, but we can choose to treat one another with kindness, compassion, and respect.
“The Senate passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act with a bipartisan vote of 64-32 last November, and the House ought to follow suit without delay. Today, we are standing up against discrimination by signing a petition to force a vote on ENDA – and I urge all members to join us.
“All Americans have the right to pursue the American Dream by working hard and securing a place in our middle class. House Democrats will continue to push for measures that protect LGBT Americans in the workplace, in school, and throughout our economy. I hope the House will take action on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act – and do so quickly.”
