WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined House and Senate Democrats at a press conference with their State of the Union DREAMer guests to highlight the urgent need to protect DREAMers. Below are his remarks:
"We’re going to listen to the President of the United States talk about the state of the union and the state of the union is better because of the DREAMers. The state of the union will be brighter in the future because of the DREAMers, if we make the right decision for DREAMers.
“[Senator] Cory Booker was right. Leader Pelosi was right. Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham was right. America is a land of DREAMers. Indeed it is a land of DREAMers and that is why America is so great—because of its diversity, because of its different views, and the ability to come together and work together.
“I am so proud to be here with a 19 year old fireball who’s going to make America a wonderful, wonderful place for those who come after her…. This is Gabriela Hernandez. Gabriela, thank you so much for what you’re doing. She’s been here. She’s been to elementary school, junior high school, and she’s now in college in Prince George’s County. And she said the other day when we were on TV together, you know I put my hand over my heart and I pledge allegiance to the only country I know, the United States of America.
“One nation, under God, indivisible. Let us hope, in the next few days we can say to these DREAMers, dream on, dream on here. Let us redeem the American dream and do the right thing and keep the DREAMers in the country that is theirs, but for paper. God bless you, DREAMers."
