WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined the House Democratic leadership at a press conference before the votes to go to conference and to instruct conferees on the GOP tax scam bills. Below is a transcript of his remarks:
“Thank you very much, Leader. Every Republican leader in the House and in the Senate, for years, has been saying the debt is the biggest problem confronting our country. They have now passed in the House, and in the Senate, different bills, but the biggest debt creator bills. I call it a debt tax. You hear a lot about the death tax - this is the debt tax that is being passed, that will sink our grandchildren and our great grandchildren deeply into debt, preclude us from investing in our future as the Leader said, and expose Medicare to a $25 billion cut next year. If anyone votes on these bills, and is responsible, they must vote no. These tax bills are bad for America, bad for working people, 81 million of whom will receive a tax increase under this bill.
“Let us hope that responsibility and a pledge to support this country and its well-being prevails and these bills are sent back to Committee, where we can work on them in a bipartisan way. Yes, to help grow the economy and grow jobs and do so in a way that will be effective.”
