WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer released the following statement today after he joined in submitting an amicus brief in Zubik v. Burwell in advance of the United States Supreme Court hearing arguments in March. The amicus brief, which was signed by 123 Democratic Members of Congress, was authored by Reps. Jerrold Nadler (NY-10), Diana DeGette (CO-1), and Louise Slaughter (NY-25).  Click here to read a PDF of the amicus brief.

“I was proud to sign on to this amicus brief in a case critical to women’s access to contraceptive coverage.  Once again, Republicans cannot overturn the Affordable Care Act in Congress, so they are attempting to do so through litigation. This time they are trying to undermine the ACA's guarantee of coverage of contraceptives for every woman who seeks it.  No woman should have to seek permission from her employer or the government to obtain affordable contraception and reproductive health services, and I will continue to stand up for women’s guaranteed access under the health care reforms Congress enacted when I served as Majority Leader.”
