WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on President Trump's tweet this morning calling on Republicans to stop "wasting their time" on immigration legislation:
“President Trump’s tweet this morning was astounding. For months he has called on Congress to solve the DACA crisis that he created – and just days ago he called on Congress to solve the family separation crisis he created – but today he has decided that it’s a waste of time. Democrats have put forward multiple bipartisan proposals, all of which he has dismissed out of hand. Given the frequency with which he changes his mind, it comes as no surprise that House Republicans are again punting on their responsibility to take action to protect DREAMers and the children who continue to be separated from their parents.
“Legislation to deal with immigration is not, as the President and many of his allies in Congress believe, a waste of time. Those who care about what happens to our nation’s DREAMers, about families fleeing violence, and about our national security must come together without delay, no matter what President Trump is tweeting, to take action. Congress has a responsibility to create a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers and ensure that thousands of separated children are reunited with their families. That’s what Democrats are committed to doing and will continue to work toward, no matter how long Republicans kick the can down the road.”
