WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in anticipation of Monday’s oral arguments before the Supreme Court in United States v. Texas

“On Monday, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case that will have significant bearing on the lives of millions of families. I was proud to sign an amicus brief in United States v. Texas along with 224 other Democratic Members of the House and Senate to express our view that President Obama acted within his legal authority when he launched the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and expanded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs. Without Congressional action to fix our broken immigration system, DACA and DAPA are the only tools at the Administration’s disposal to prevent immigrant families from being split apart.

“It is clear that President Obama took appropriate steps under existing law to set common-sense enforcement priorities and mitigate the effects of our broken system on immigrant families. Every one of his predecessors since President Eisenhower has taken executive action on immigration, and I am confident that the Court will rule in favor of allowing DAPA and DACA to move forward. I want to thank Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairwoman Linda Sanchez, Members of the CHC, and Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren for their leadership on this issue, and I will continue working with them to defend the President’s executive actions and push for comprehensive immigration reform.”
