WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after House Republican leaders released text of their draft immigration bill this afternoon:

"The immigration bill unveiled this afternoon by the Speaker is no compromise at all. It is a bill hurried to the Floor in days with the sole purpose of derailing a fair, bipartisan Queen of the Hill process. It is shameful that Republicans walked away from a bipartisan process and proposed this terrible legislation instead.

“This bill throws billions in taxpayer dollars into President Trump's ineffective border wall and creates an onerous system under which many DREAMers may never be able to earn the right to stay in the only country they've ever called home.  Moreover, this bill would make severe cuts to legal immigration that have nothing to do with addressing DREAMers and would instead keep family members apart. It is an anti-immigrant bill, simply put.

“Democrats will oppose this bill. It is a pretense for addressing this crisis with a guarantee that it won’t. In fact, it makes that goal harder to achieve.”
