WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after he attended a briefing by the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers on educators who are DACA recipients, where he discussed the urgent need to bring the DREAM Act to the Floor for a vote:

“Today, I joined the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers to call attention to the danger of deporting 20,000 educators from our country simply because they were brought here as children without proper documentation.  These DREAMers are working hard to teach the next generation of Americans and prepare them for success.  They are an example of the broad and negative impact that President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will have if Congress fails to take action.  That’s why I’ve been calling on House Republicans to join Democrats in an effort to bring the DREAM Act to the Floor immediately so that Congress can provide DREAMers, their families, and their communities with the peace of mind that they will not be deported.

“We must have a permanent legislative solution to this challenge.  The American people overwhelmingly support allowing DREAMers to stay in the country they call home and to which they contribute every day.  I urge Republicans to protect DREAMers from deportation to join us in bringing the DREAM Act to the Floor without any further delay.”
