WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of the 70th anniversary of victory in Europe in the Second World War:

“Victory in Europe on May 8, 1945, fulfilled the hopes and prayers of so many people and nations who had struggled under the yoke of fascism and the Nazis’ brutal, genocidal regime.  It was achieved with the blood, determination, and grit of millions of American and Allied troops, many serving far from their loved ones at home but finding in the areas they liberated the eternal gratitude of families who would love them as their own.

“From those first, courageous strides ashore on the beaches of Normandy and Sicily to the harsh winter in the Ardennes, from the skies over Berlin to the icy waters of the North Atlantic, those who served in the fight to free Europe have never forgotten the challenges they faced or the comrades they lost.  Neither will we forget as a nation, and each year on this day we join together to recall with pride and awe the extraordinary heroism that demands we never take our freedom or that of our allies for granted.  Together, the United States and our European partners will continue to stand up to aggression and injustice and keep the world safe for democracy.”
