Hoyer Asks Leader McCarthy to See the GOP ACA Repeal Bill, Whether it Will Be Marked Up Next Week

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) engaged in a colloquy on the House Floor today with Majority Leader McCarthy, where he asked to see the House GOP’s draft Affordable Care Act repeal bill and whether committees will mark that bill up next week. Below is a link to the video and highlights from the exchange.

Mr. Hoyer: “Can I see the bill today?"

Mr. McCarthy: “You’re not on that committee, so you can look at it when we mark it up.”

Mr. Hoyer: “Is the Leader telling me that he does not know personally whether a markup is scheduled on the Affordable Care Act repeal next week? I yield to my friend.”

Mr. McCarthy: “I thank the Gentleman for asking. That's a question to the Chairman. I simply provide you the schedule for next week...”

Mr. Hoyer: “I thank the Gentleman, but that was not my question, whether the Chairman of the Committee knows. Maybe the gentleman does not know, in which case he can say no. My question was, does the gentleman know whether a markup is scheduled for next week in the Ways and Means Committee on the repeal of the Affordable Care Act?”

Mr. McCarthy: “I thank the gentleman for yielding. That's an action of the committees and they will list as soon as they are prepared to do their markups.”

Mr. Hoyer: “I don't know if that's a yes or a no or an ‘I don't intend to tell you.’ …. I would suggest to the Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Speaker, that the Majority Leader ought to be informed of what the Committee is doing on such a very important issue.”
