WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) announced the winners of the 2013 Member Online All-Star Competition today. See below for the list of Members, Committees, and Caucuses that have been named 2013 Online All-Stars.
“I’m pleased to congratulate the Online All-Stars from this year’s annual social media competition with House Democrats,” Whip Hoyer said. “Over the three week contest, House Democrats acquired over 163,000 new Facebook fans, Twitter followers, and Youtube subscribers, surpassing last year’s total by 24,000.”
This year’s top finishers used innovative social media techniques to gain their new followers. The 2013 MVP, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (IL-04), gained 11,424 new followers by highlighting his support for comprehensive immigration reform. Freshman MVP Rep. Mark Takano (CA-41) drew on his background as a teacher to ‘grade’ a Republican letter on immigration reform that helped him gain 8,515 new followers. Overall, House Democratic Freshmen posted impressive gains in followers, capturing 17 of the top 50 All-Star spots. Committee Democrats and Caucuses also participated in the competition, with the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Ways & Means Committee, and the Oversight & Government Reform Committee all being named All-Stars.
Whip Hoyer added: “Because of the great work of Members and their staff, House Democrats are now connected online with more Americans than ever before. Even though the contest has concluded, Democrats are committed to continuing to use social media proactively to hear from constituents and help keep them informed and engaged.”
