WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined House Democrats and Americans affected by gun violence this morning at a press conference to call on House Republicans to hold a vote on meaningful legislation to address gun violence. At the event, he introduced Catherine Bodine, who lost her daughter to gun violence two years ago. Below is a transcript of his remarks:

“Thank you all for being here. Thank you for being here. Two weeks ago, Democrats held the Floor to demand real action to keep Americans safe from gun violence. The American people want a vote.

“[Rep.] John Lewis will speak to us at the end. He marched to get the vote. He speaks now; he sat, and [he] stands, to get the vote.  And to expand background checks and to make sure those who are too dangerous to fly are also unqualified to buy weapons.

“All of us know that the bill Republicans are talking about bringing to the Floor this week doesn’t cut it. It’s endorsed by the NRA and it would make America less safe, not more safe.

“Millions of families have been affected by gun violence. Ninety-one very brave survivors stand behind me, some of whom, as the Leader has said, will speak to you today.

“They have lost loved ones and have endured, in some cases, life-enduring injuries.

“Today, we are joined by those families, including Catherine Bodine. Catherine Bodine lost her 10-year-old daughter Samantha to gun violence two years ago. A moment of silence is not enough, action is required.

“We owe it to Catherine, we owe it to Samantha, and so many families across America to give them a vote on meaningful, effective legislation to address gun violence. Democrats will continue to demand a vote, for as long as it takes. Ladies and gentlemen, Catherine Bodine.”
