WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed the 21st Century Cures Act:
“Today, Democrats and Republicans came together to pass the most significant investment in biomedical research in more than a decade, which will have a profound impact on medical innovation and help spur growth in a critical sector of our economy. I am proud to be a cosponsor of the 21st Century Cures Act, which will streamline the processes by which new treatments and technologies are developed to bring hope and relief to patients and their families. Our bill provides a significant increase in funding to the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration and new incentives for high-risk, high-reward research and early stage investigation into areas of unmet medical needs, including precision medicine, biomarkers, and antibiotic resistance.
“This bill will also help us train and equip the most competitive biomedical workforce in the world while encouraging greater diversity in that workforce. It is also fiscally responsible, achieving deficit savings of more than half a billion dollars over the next ten years. I want to thank Ranking Members Pallone, DeGette, and Green, as well as Chairmen Upton and Pitts, for their hard work to secure broad bipartisan support for this legislation.”
