MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP

This week, House Republicans passed their harmful, ill-conceived budget resolution for Fiscal Year 2016. Instead of putting forward a blueprint for economic growth and opportunity that will help hardworking Americans get ahead, Republicans passed another dishonest proposal that relies on partisan messaging and gimmicks rather than making the tough choices needed to put our nation on a fiscally sustainable path while investing in our future. House Democrats will continue to advocate for a budget that will replace the reckless policy of sequester, invest in areas critical to our competitiveness, including innovation, research, and infrastructure, and ensure more working Americans can get ahead.

Although House Republicans didn’t work with us this week to pass a responsible budget, I was pleased both parties were able to reach a compromise on H.R. 2, a bill which permanently fixes the sustainable growth rate and reauthorizes the Children's Health Insurance Program.  By working on a bipartisan basis, we were able to fix what we all agree is a flawed formula. Our constituents want their Representatives in Congress to work together on their behalf, and this week we did that by passing an important bill that will provide relief to low-income seniors, children, and families.

Lastly, on Monday we celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Affordable Care Act. I was proud to have played a leading role in moving that legislation through the House of Representatives as Majority Leader. I will continue to work with Democrats in the House and Senate to defend and improve the law, which has brought health care benefits and cost savings to millions of Americans across the country, including the 16.4 million previously uninsured Americans who now have access to quality, affordable health care.  Despite House Republicans holding over fifty-six failed votes to repeal or undermine the law and attempting to repeal the law in their budget, the Affordable Care Act continues to work for American families, as well as for our economy and budget.

Sincerely yours,
