MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP

This week, I was pleased to see the House take bipartisan action on two cybersecurity bills that will help our nation address cyber threats, while significantly improving on previous legislative efforts to protect the privacy of Americans. Cyber threats impose a growing risk to the safety and security of our nation so I was pleased that both parties were able to come together to address this important national security issue. While I still have concerns regarding certain liability protection provisions, I hope those concerns can be resolved in conference with the Senate.

Next week, House and Senate Republicans are expected to reach agreement on a final budget resolution. It is expected to include extreme policies that harm working Americans and their families and irresponsible spending levels that won’t allow us to adequately fund critical programs. Since Republicans took over the majority in 2011, they have never been able to implement the policies include in their budget, which even many of their own Members have acknowledged as being workable. Instead of disinvesting in American families and our long-term economic competiveness with an unrealistic messaging document, I will continue to urge House Republicans to work with us on a responsible alternative that replaces the dangerous sequester and puts our nation on a fiscally sustainable path while promoting economic growth.

Lastly, on Thursday, the Senate finally voted to confirm Loretta Lynch as our next Attorney General. After 56 days of obstruction – the longest wait for an Attorney General nominee since Ronald Reagan’s presidency –  Loretta Lynch made history by becoming the first African American woman to assume the position as the top law enforcement officer in the United States. With her impeccable credentials, a wealth of experience, and broad support from both Democrats and Republicans, she will serve our nation well as head of the Justice Department. I look forward to working with her to help keep our communities safe, while defending the civil and human rights of all Americans.

Sincerely yours,
