House Republicans Prioritize Partisanship at the Expense of Protecting Our National Security
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
This week, House Republicans once again abandoned their duty to govern responsibly by attaching draconian, anti-immigrant amendments to a bipartisan bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Instead of working across the aisle to ensure that DHS has the resources it needs, Republicans catered to the far-right wing of their party by adding poison-pill amendments to this must-pass legislation that would tear families apart and deport DREAMers. By turning what was a bipartisan measure into a partisan bill, House Republicans are threatening national security. Just a week after the heinous terrorist attacks in France, it is critical that we provide the Department of Homeland Security with the funding necessary to plan ahead, respond to threats, and keep our citizens and communities safe and secure. Democrats, along with over two dozen House Republicans and several Republican Senators, have expressed their strong opposition to these partisan amendments and will continue to urge House Republican leaders to stop playing games with our national security.
House Republicans also passed a number of partisan bills that won’t grow our economy or put Americans back to work. Following last week’s strong economic news – including a jobs report that marked 58 months of consecutive private sector job growth and showed unemployment falling to 5.6% – it is Congress’s responsibility to build on these gains by supporting continued economic growth and expanding middle-class opportunities. I hope House Republicans will begin to work with Democrats on these important bipartisan priorities so more people can feel our economic recovery and make it in America.
Sincerely yours,
