House Republicans' One-Month Progress Report
Republicans have controlled both the House and the Senate for four weeks, and their record shows that House Republicans have focused on extreme, partisan legislation rather than taking action to help the middle class and all those who aspire to it. Here's a review of their first four weeks:
REPUBLICAN REPORT CARD | ||
SUBJECT | GRADE | COMMENTS |
ON JOB CREATION | ![]() | Republicans pledged that they would “grow America’s economy,” but four weeks into the 114th Congress, they have yet to bring any jobs bills to the Floor. |
ON FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY | ![]() | Republicans' partisan rules package for the 114th Congress expanded the use of "dynamic scoring" of legislation, allowing them to hide the cost to the deficit of enacting tax cuts. While Republicans continue to suggest that tax cuts pay for themselves, history proves that’s not the case. Implementing dynamic scoring is reckless fiscal policy that will only drive up future deficits. They also voted for a bill that would add $53 billion to the deficit. |
ON IMPROVING HEALTH CARE FOR AMERICANS | ![]() | In the first week of the 114th Congress, House Republicans held their 54th vote to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act – a vote that would cause around one million Americans to lose their employer-sponsored health care coverage and would add $53 billion to the deficit. Next week, they will hold their 56th vote – this time a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act. In addition to repealing and undermining health care reform, they also brought to the Floor a partisan bill to roll back women's health care choices. Due to opposition from their own Members, Republicans had to pull the extreme bill – only to replace it with another one. |
ON ENERGY | ![]() | In their first month, House Republicans have brought several pieces of legislation to the Floor that would roll back public health protections and give businesses either an enhanced role in the regulatory process or, for some businesses, special exemptions from requirements that all other businesses in their sector must follow. |
ON IMMIGRATION REFORM | ![]() | The overwhelming majority of Americans, the business community, labor, the tech community, the agriculture community, and others support comprehensive immigration reform. Not only have House Republicans refused to work with Democrats to fix a system that we all agree is broken, but they voted to deport DREAMers and introduced a partisan bill that would militarize our Southwestern border – which they also had to pull from the Floor last week. |
ON NATIONAL SECURITY | ![]() | Earlier this month, House Republicans put our national security at risk by attaching draconian, anti-immigrant amendments to must-pass legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security past the February 27 deadline. Instead of introducing bipartisan legislation to keep our families and communities safe and secure, House Republicans are more concerned with deporting DREAMers. They are “increasingly unworried” by the threat of shutting down DHS, despite warnings from former DHS Secretaries. |
