MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP

This week, I was deeply disappointed that House Republicans failed to take action to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank before its charter expires on June 30. As Members return to their districts next week, Republicans will need to explain to their constituents why they are risking thousands of American jobs and harming our ability to compete in the global marketplace by refusing to pass legislation to keep the Bank open. It’s time for Republicans to stop governing by crisis, and I will continue to urge them to put legislation on the Floor when we return from the district work period to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank so that we can support job creation and build confidence in our economy.

I was also disappointed that House Republicans held their 60th vote to undermine or repeal the Affordable Care Act this week, despite the fact that 16.4 million previously uninsured Americans now have access to quality, affordable health coverage. I was pleased that the Supreme Court decided yesterday to uphold the health care law in their King v. Burwell ruling. Following this decision, I hope that Republicans will abandon their efforts to undo the critical patient protections and cost savings the Affordable Care Act provides.

In addition to reaffirming that subsidies to make health care coverage more affordable should be made available to all Americans, regardless of where they live, the Supreme Court also ruled in favor of marriage equality this week. This was the right decision, which will provide every loving couple the right to marry in all fifty states, and I join in celebrating this step toward equality for all Americans.

Sincerely yours,
