House Passes Vehicle to Give Tax Cuts to the Wealthy at the Expense of the Middle Class
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
This week, House Republicans adopted the Senate Republican budget, which is merely a vehicle to jam tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans through Congress. According to analysis by the non-partisan Tax Policy Center, the Republican tax framework gives 80% of the tax cuts to the top 1% of Americans – those making over $900,000 – while increasing taxes on 47 million Americans and adding $2.4 trillion dollars to the deficit. Democrats stand ready to work with Republicans to overhaul and reform the tax code in a bipartisan fashion, but as Republicans move forward with a partisan tax bill that leaves middle class families behind, we will strongly oppose that effort.
In addition, I continue to urge my Republican colleagues to bring the bipartisan Alexander-Murray bill to strengthen the Affordable Care Act to the Floor for a vote. Yesterday, the Congressional Budget Office released an analysis that shows the bill would not only stabilize health insurance markets but would also bring down the deficit by nearly $4 billion dollars over the next decade. I urge my Republican colleagues to bring this bill to the Floor before open enrollment begins November 1.
Finally, I am leading a bipartisan delegation to the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Florida Keys today and tomorrow to assess hurricane damage and continue to advocate for assistance for our fellow Americans. I will continue to call attention to the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and advocate for resources as our fellow citizens recover and rebuild.
Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
