MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP

Today, the House took important action to fund our government and keep it operating on behalf of the American people. The omnibus bill was not perfect, but I believe that it represented a reasonable compromise that was needed to provide certainty to American families. While my concerns regarding lifting the crude oil export ban and not enabling Puerto Rico to refinance its debt remain, I am pleased that both parties came together to avert another costly government shutdown and increase in investments in the domestic priorities that keep our nation strong.

Unfortunately, the House also voted this week to pass a permanent, unpaid-for tax extenders package that would explode our deficit and undermine the possibility of comprehensive tax reform. I opposed this legislation because I believe that if we want to continue to grow our economy, we must pay for what we buy. I’m also concerned that passing this legislation undermines the chance to pass comprehensive tax reform next year, which our nation clearly needs.

When Congress returns to session in 2016, House Democrats will continue our work to advance issues that make America safer, stronger, and more secure. I will continue to urge my colleagues across the aisle to work with us on legislative items that strengthen our economic competiveness, create well-paying jobs, and provide more opportunities for hardworking Americans hoping to make it into the middle class. Over the last few weeks, we have seen what’s possible when we work in a bipartisan way – from passing a highway bill, to reopening the Export-Import Bank, to reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. I hope we will return in the new year recommitted to continuing this progress.

Lastly, I’d like to wish all of you a very safe and happy holiday season spent with friends and family.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
