House Democrats Continue to Call for Action on Highway Trust Fund, Export-Import Bank, Comprehensive Immigration Reform
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
Before the end of the month, Congress must take action to reauthorize the Highway Trust Fund and reopen the Export-Import Bank – both of which will support jobs here in the U.S. Last week, the House passed a five-month reauthorization of the Highway Trust Fund, and I continue to urge the Senate to work in a bipartisan way to reauthorize the Highway Trust Fund before the July 31 deadline. In the long run, we need to reach agreement on a six-year bill that contains the robust funding levels needed to boost our competitiveness. At the same time, Congress must act to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank, which Republicans shut down earlier this month. The Export-Import Bank helps ensure American businesses can compete on a level playing field with their global competitors. It enjoys strong bipartisan support, and I hope Republican leaders will side with businesses in their district, rather than extreme Members in their party, and allow a vote to reopen the Bank.
This week, House Republicans passed yet another partisan, anti-immigrant bill that claims to be a legislative solution to the tragedy in San Francisco earlier this month. Unfortunately, the legislation would not have prevented that tragedy. Instead, it would withhold public safety funding, undermine the trust between immigrants and local law enforcement, and demonize the immigrant community. This legislation won’t enhance public safety or fix our broken immigration system. The overwhelming majority of Americans support comprehensive immigration reform, and I believe it’s time that the House bring a comprehensive reform bill to the Floor, debate it, and pass it.
Sunday marks the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law by President George H. W. Bush on July 26, 1990. I was proud to sponsor this historic legislation to prohibit discrimination and ensure equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities, and I am pleased to see the progress the ADA has made in the advancement of civil rights and equality over the past twenty-five years. I look forward to continuing my work in Congress to expand access to opportunities for all Americans and remove obstacles that stand in the way of the American Dream.
Sincerely yours,
