MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP

Last night, House Democrats, led by the Hispanic Caucus, began the process to force a vote on the DREAM Act. In seven legislative days, Members of both parties can begin signing a petition to force consideration of the DREAM Act. I hope that every Republican that says they want a legislative solution to prevent DREAMers from being deported will join us in signing this petition. The DREAM Act is a bipartisan, bicameral bill and provides a permanent solution to allow DREAMers to stay in the country following President Trump’s shameful decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.  I will be urging all Members to join me in forcing a vote so we can protect DREAMers.

Today, the House voted on a package to fund the government, ensure our nation pays its bills, and provide Hurricane Harvey relief. It also reauthorized the Flood insurance program. This package passed with overwhelming bipartisan support. However, it represents just the first step in recovery for these communities. As communities rebuild from Hurricane Harvey and prepare for Hurricane Irma, we must continue to ensure they have the necessary resources.

Next week the House will continue considering Republicans’ partisan funding bills that drastically underfunds priorities. These bills will never pass the Senate or be signed into law. Instead of wasting time, we ought to work together on a bipartisan budget agreement that adequately invests in our nation’s future and security.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
