The Hill: Right voices opposition to government funding plan
Just in case you thought House Republicans were ready to stop threatening to shut down the government, think again. The GOP continues to be divided over their “CROmnibus” strategy, with some arguing that a shutdown is the way to go. From The Hill:
“Leading conservatives are voicing opposition to a plan that would avoid a government shutdown by funding most of the government through next September.”
“Speaking at an event sponsored by the conservative Heritage Foundation, the lawmakers described the plan as a concession and called on House Republicans to only agree to a short-term funding bill for the government.”
“But Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.) said funding the DHS just through March would be excessive and added it made ‘no sense’ to fund the rest of the government through September.”
“‘That seems way too long,’ Huelskamp said. ‘The shorter, the better.’”
So let’s get this straight: according to Republicans, it makes no sense to stabilize and grow our economy, support job creation, and provide economic certainty by passing an omnibus that funds the entire government? Unfortunately, that logic just doesn’t add up. If our friends across the aisle are having such a hard time reaching agreement among themselves to fund the government, GOP leadership should work with Democrats to take responsible action and pass an omnibus before we adjourn for the year.
