The GOP Farm Bill Hurts Seniors

Jobs & the Economy
Add AARP to the growing list of organizations opposed to Republicans’ partisan Farm Bill. Through its extensive cuts to nutrition assistance, the GOP Farm Bill will put millions of seniors at risk of going hungry. Take a look at what AARP has to say here or see excerpts below:

“SNAP is an especially important program for older Americans because many live on fixed incomes and have limited financial resources to spend on basic necessities like food and housing. AARP Foundation research shows that 2 in 5 American adults over age 50 had to cut down or skip meals in the last year because of a lack of food, and 1 in 5 have difficulty buying nutritious food.”

“…SNAP has been linked to better health outcomes.  Older Americans receiving SNAP are less likely to forgo needed medicines due to cost. Moreover, SNAP participation has been linked to reduced hospital and nursing home admissions among older adults… access to adequate benefits may help avoid costly hospitalizations for conditions such as high blood sugar.”

“AARP opposes H.R. 2 in its current form because it adds new barriers in the SNAP program…The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that under H.R. 2 there will be 1.2 million fewer people in an average month receiving SNAP benefits in 2028, of which about 27 percent ‘would be between the ages of 50 and 59 and without dependents.’”

“…The punitive measures included within H.R. 2 would potentially lock individuals and families out of needed SNAP benefits if they fail to meet or demonstrate that they meet the law’s work requirements.  Those who fail to meet the work requirements one single time could lose benefits for one year, while each subsequent failure could result in a lock-out of 36 months.”
