Flash Back: This Time Last Year President Obama Signed Three Make It In America Bills Into Law

While Republicans have not put forward a comprehensive jobs agenda after eight months in the majority, Democrats are focused on supporting job creation through the Make It In America plan – a plan to promote job creation by providing an environment for businesses to innovate and make products here in the U.S., which will help more families Make It In America.

What Democrats Were Doing To Support Job Creation Last Year:

One year ago, President Obama signed three Make It In America bills into law:

One year ago today:

  • President signs a bill into law that prevents the outsourcing of U.S. jobs by closing tax loopholes that encourage companies to send U.S. jobs overseas.
  • President also signs a bill to help the Patent Office begin to unclog the backlog—totaling about 1.2 million pending applications—by giving the agency access to more of the fees it collects so that patent applications can continue to be processed and innovative ideas can continue to move to market.
One year ago tomorrow: President signs into law the U.S. Manufacturing Enhancement Act, which makes it cheaper for American companies to obtain the materials they need to manufacture goods. The law was expected to support 90,000 manufacturing jobs, and U.S. manufacturing employment has increased by over 150,000 jobs since August 2010.

During the last Congress, President Obama also signed these Make It In America bills into law:

  • Small Business Jobs Act: Expands much needed lending to millions of small businesses and offers tax incentives to help small businesses grow, hire, and fuel our economy, without adding a dime to the deficit. [09/27/10]
  • Energy Jobs and Training for Veterans Act: Provides grants for programs to provide on-the-job training, apprenticeship, real experience, and long-term employment in all energy fields. [10/13/10]
  • America COMPETES Reauthorization Act: Establishes innovative technology federal loan guarantees for small- and medium-sized manufacturers and invests in science, technology, engineering, and math education. [01/04/11]

What Republicans Are Doing To Support Job Creation This Year:

Nothing.

In this Congress, Republicans have taken little action to address Americans’ top priorities: creating jobs and growing the economy. Republicans have not put forward a comprehensive jobs agenda and have passed bills that are more focused on their partisan agenda than helping create jobs. The Make It In America plan is an agenda that both Democrats and Republicans can, and have, supported. After speaking with their constituents over the next few weeks, we hope Republicans will return to Washington ready to focus on jobs and work with us on our plan to foster an environment that encourages manufacturers to innovate, grow, keep and create good jobs in the U.S.
