The House Education and Labor Committee holds their markup at 3:00 p.m. today, and we wanted to be sure you had a few stats in mind as you cover the markup:
- Increasing the minimum wage to $15/hour would lift nearly a million Americans out of poverty, and 27 million workers would see a pay increase. [CNBC, 2/8/21]
- In the midst of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, lifting wages for workers and providing assistance to low-income families is more essential than ever.
- Students of color around the nation have experienced learning loss at a higher rate than their white counterparts, falling months behind due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [Washington Post, 12/6/20]
- The American Rescue Plan would provide nearly $130 billion to help schools reopen safely, getting students back in the classroom and back on track to address the growing disparities in education.
- The legislation also includes $40 billion for higher education institutions to help students experiencing hardships as a result of the pandemic.
- More than 2 million women have dropped out of the workforce in the last year, and millions of parents haven’t returned to the workforce because of a lack of child care. [Bloomberg, 1/29/21]
- This round of COVID-19 relief legislation provides $39 billion to the Child Care and Development Block Grant Program to make child care more affordable for American families.
