Director Ronald Davis of COPS Program Meets with Democratic Whip Task Force on Poverty, Income Inequality, and Opportunity

WASHINGTON, DC – This afternoon, the Democratic Whip Task Force on Poverty, Income Inequality, and Opportunity met with Ronald Davis, Director of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) at the Department of Justice. The Task Force and Director Davis discussed how the COPS program helps to build trust and mutual respect between police and communities, reduce crime, and address underlying issues in communities across the country. 

“As a Member of the Law Enforcement Caucus, I have been a long-time supporter of the COPS Program,” stated Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer. “A number of COPS grant programs provide critical funding for local and state law enforcement initiatives that make our communities more safe and secure and address issues, such as substance abuse, that contribute to a cycle of poverty. I thank Director Davis for joining the Task Force today, and I will continue to advocate for robust funding of these important programs.”

I have known and worked with Director Davis for many years, including during his 20 years of service in the Oakland Police Department,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee. “As a member of the Appropriations and Budget Committees, I have long supported COPS programs and the implementation of community-oriented policing programs. These programs are proven to be highly effective in enhancing public safety, building community trust and increasing diversity within local law enforcement.”

Launched in 2013, the Democratic Whip Task Force on Poverty, Income Inequality, and Opportunity works to raise the awareness of Members of Congress and the American people about the ongoing crisis of poverty, the positive human and economic impacts of effective poverty alleviation programs, and the need for a comprehensive national effort to eradicate poverty. The Task Force consults with key stakeholders and works closely with the Administration to develop support for strategies to eradicate poverty.
