Democrats Continue to Urge GOP to Take Responsible Action to Pay America's Bills, Reach Agreement on Government Funding Levels
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
Today, House Republicans passed a partisan budget reconciliation bill that repeals provisions of the Affordable Care Act and defunds Planned Parenthood. In addition to attempting to undermine the Affordable Care Act for the sixty-first time and attack women’s health, the bill also substantially adds to the deficit over the long run. It’s unfortunate that the House wasted time on another messaging proposal that has no chance of becoming law instead of working on a bipartisan basis to address immediate deadlines confronting Congress.
The House is running out of time to take action to ensure we pay America’s bills before November 3. This week, Republicans brought another partisan bill to the Floor that plans for default and would pay foreign bondholders before America’s veterans, small businesses, students, and families. The bill is not a serious solution. Instead, we need to pass a clean bill – no strings attached – to pay America’s bills and avert the serious economic consequences of default.
Additionally, Congress has a responsibility to reach an agreement on funding levels for the government so that we can replace the “unrealistic and ill-conceived” sequester cuts to both defense and non-defense priorities and avert a government shutdown on December 11. I continue to urge Republican leaders to work with us to reach a responsible agreement. Democrats stand ready to work across the aisle to ensure we are adequately investing in our nation’s future.
