Democrats Call For Action to Address Gun Violence and Assistance for Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
This week, we continue to keep the victims of the shooting in Las Vegas and their families in our thoughts and prayers. I joined House Democrats in the wake of the shooting to once again call for action to address gun violence. We are demanding a vote on bipartisan legislation to strengthen background checks, as well as the creation of a bipartisan Select Committee on Gun Violence to find a solution to address the epidemic of gun violence in this country.
In addition, House Democrats also remain focused on providing relief for our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. I continue to urge the Trump Administration to deploy every resource necessary to address this humanitarian crisis.
Finally, this week, House Republicans brought their budget resolution to the Floor, which is a vehicle to pursue their tax reform framework. This framework cuts taxes for the wealthiest Americans at the expense of the middle class and would explode the deficit, adding $2.4 trillion dollars to the deficit over the next decade. If Republicans are interested in true reform of our nation’s tax code, they ought to work with Democrats in a bipartisan fashion to provide relief and opportunity for middle class Americans.
Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
