Democrats are ready to meet America's financial obligations. Republicans should let them do so.

Ahead of the expected Senate vote on cloture for legislation to meet America’s financial obligations through passing a House-approved suspension of the debt limit through December 2022, we wanted to remind you that business organizations, bipartisan civic leaders, and financial experts are on-record urging Congress to do the right thing. Republicans must allow Democrats to vote to keep America in full faith and credit to stave off global financial crisis that could “cost the U.S. economy up to 6 million jobs, wipe out as much as $15 trillion in household wealth, and send the unemployment rate surging to roughly 9 percent from around 5 percent.

We want to be clear: this is not just about Republicans’ clear hypocrisy in asking Democrats to work with them three times to suspend the debt limit during the Trump Administration and their sudden refusal to under a Democratic administration. This is about Senate Republicans risking financial calamity by directly blocking action on the debt limit simply to score political points.

Democrats are ready and willing to take action on the debt limit and ensure America pays its bills on time on their own – if Senate Republicans don’t want to cause economic crisis for millions of working Americans, they should vote for cloture and allow Democrats to do the work of governing responsibly and suspending the debt limit.
