Under the Microscope

Closer Than We’ve Ever Been Before

Yesterday health insurance reform took another big step forward when the Senate Finance Committee, the last of the five House and Senate Committees with jurisdiction over health reform, reported a health insurance reform bill with a bipartisan vote of 14 to 9.  The vote was significant not only because it was bipartisan but because reform has now come farther than any effort since Teddy Roosevelt first pushed for major health care reform. Adding to the sense of this issue's importance to the country, today another Republican Senator, Susan Collins (R-ME), said she was open to voting for a health insurance reform bill as well.

Current System A Growing Burden

Not only are we closer than ever, the need has never been greater for reform. Today’s Wall Street Journal has a story about how “employees will pay $4,023 on average in premiums and out-of-pocket charges next year” up double digits from 2009.

Health Insurers Emerge As Obama's Top Foe In Reform Effort
