MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP

Yesterday, I hosted the first hearing in a series of hearings called “Make It In America: What’s Next?” Since I launched the Make It In America jobs plan in 2010 to revitalize American manufacturing and support job creation, sixteen Make It In America bills have been signed into law. Five years later, our economic landscape has changed, and it is time to update our Make It In America plan to ensure that it continues to address the new economic successes and challenges facing our nation today. During the first hearing, I heard from House Democratic Members who discussed what we should be doing to build on the successes we’ve seen and address the challenges we face in 2015. I look forward to holding more hearings in the weeks ahead, where I’ll continue to listen to my colleagues, as well as employers, workers, innovators, and entrepreneurs, about what they think our jobs plan should look like to make sure it reflects our economy today.

One way to help American businesses succeed is to address the expiration of the Export-Import Bank, as well as the looming deadline of the Highway Trust Fund. On July 1, House Republican leaders let the Export-Import Bank shut down, putting thousands of American jobs and our economic competitiveness in the global marketplace at risk. It is deeply disappointing that Republicans refuse to allow a vote to reopen the Bank, even though the majority of Members support it. In addition, Republicans are continuing their record of governing by crisis by ignoring the reauthorization of the Highway Trust Fund, which will expire on July 31. I continue to urge my colleagues across the aisle to put the interests of American workers and businesses in their district before the interests of their party’s most extreme Members by addressing these issues as soon as possible.

Last week, House Democrats launched our 6th Annual Member Online All-Star Competition to increase engagement with our constituents. This three week competition helps Members reach Americans from every corner of the country and demonstrates the important role digital media plays in communicating our ideas for helping hardworking Americans access middle-class opportunities for themselves and their families. If you are not doing so already, I would be honored if you would follow me at twitter.com/WhipHoyer, www.facebook.com/WhipHoyer, and instagram.com/repstenyhoyer for more updates and behind-the-scenes photos from Capitol Hill and Maryland’s Fifth District. I look forward to connecting with you on these social media platforms.

Sincerely yours,
