Congress Must Act to Protect Middle Class Americans, Reach Balanced Solution to Fiscal Cliff
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
Today’s jobs report showed that our economy is improving, but to solidify our economic recovery, Congress must act swiftly to avert the fiscal cliff, extend middle class tax cuts, and promote job creation through proposals like Democrats’ Make It In America jobs legislation. With less than four weeks remaining until we reach the fiscal cliff, members of both parties must work together to reach a big, balanced, and bipartisan solution that includes both revenues and spending cuts. An increasing number of Republicans are recognizing the need for a comprehensive solution that includes higher tax rates on the wealthy, and I remain hopeful an agreement will be reached before the end of the year.
Earlier this week, I joined 178 Members of Congress in signing a discharge petition that would bring the Senate-passed bill extending middle class tax cuts to the House Floor for a vote. I will continue calling on House Republicans to stop holding these tax cuts hostage, and join with us in providing middle class families and small businesses with the certainty they need while we negotiate a larger solution to the fiscal cliff.
Sincerely yours,
STENY H. HOYER
