Congress Continues to Stand Shoulder-to-Shoulder With the People of France While Ensuring Safety and Compassion Here at Home
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
My thoughts and prayers continue to be with the people of France following last Friday’s tragic attacks in Paris. The American people share the pain of the French and will continue to stand in solidarity with them as they mourn and seek justice. Our common values of liberty and democracy will prevail against our enemies’ acts of terror.
The safety and security of Americans remain our top priority in Congress. While I believe we should review our refugee vetting process to ensure it remains rigorous and comprehensive, I was disappointed Republicans rushed to the Floor a bill that would slow down the vetting process without enhancing our security. I believe we must do everything within reason to keep Americans safe, but that does not mean we have to sacrifice our compassion for those that are fleeing from our shared enemy.
When Congress returns from next week’s District Work Period, we will have just eight legislative days left to avert another costly Republican-led government shutdown. Speaker Ryan has said he wants to govern responsibly and I will continue to urge him to do so by ending his party’s irresponsible pattern of governing by crisis and instead working with Democrats on a bipartisan bill to fund the government beyond December 11.
I hope you all have a safe and happy Thanksgiving next week.
Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
