The American People Will Not Forget House Republicans’ TrumpCare Vote

MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
The House began the week on a bipartisan basis, with a majority of Democrats and Republicans coming together to support a bill to fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year. While it was not perfect, it was a compromise and Democrats worked hard to ensure that it did not include funding for a border wall and other poison pill provisions. The bill did include many of our priorities, such as health benefits for coal miners and their families; funding for Puerto Rico’s Medicaid program; and additional resources for NIH, the opioid epidemic, Pell Grants, disaster assistance, and international humanitarian assistance to alleviate famine.
However, I was disappointed that Republicans took a different path on healthcare. Just a day after we passed the funding bill, House Republicans brought TrumpCare to the Floor for a vote. The American people saw 217 House Republicans vote to take health care away from 24 million Americans, raise premiums for many more, impose an age tax on older Americans, and make coverage for one in four Americans who have a pre-existing condition unaffordable. On the Floor, I urged my colleagues to abandon their TrumpCare bill and work with Democrats to improve the Affordable Care Act so it works for everyone. Instead, they jammed the bill through the House, putting health coverage at risk for millions of people. Democrats in Congress and the American people will not forget this vote, and we will hold them accountable for the consequences.
With control of the White House and both chambers, Republicans are responsible for our health care system. Whether its jamming TrumpCare through the legislative process or sabotaging the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, Republicans own whatever happens to the marketplace. I strongly urge them to change course and work with Democrats to ensure quality, affordable health coverage for everyone. That’s what the American people expect and deserve from the Congress.
