The Democratic Whip Office’s seventh annual Member Online All-Star Competitionrecently came to a close. It was a great success, with House Democrats collectively gaining nearly a quarter of a million new social media followers over three weeks.
At the next Whip meeting of House Democrats, a competition highlights video will be presented and trophies will be awarded to the Overall MVP Barbara Lee (CA-13), Freshman MVP Rep. Ted Lieu (CA-33), and Election Blackout MVP Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02), as well as trophies for the creative category awards listed below.
Thanks to the many offices that created and nominated impressive work in each of these areas. Everyone is encouraged to vote for your favorites by sharing or liking them on Facebook (links below) by Thursday night at midnight ET.
MOST VIRAL POST AWARD
To help level the playing field for Members with less followers, the Whip’s office divided the total reach numbers by the total number of followers a Member has. After doing so, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX-30) was the winner of our 2016 “Most Viral Post” award. After Speaker Ryan posted a selfie with a large group of Republican interns that was criticized for its glaring lack of diversity, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson led the Democratic response by organizing a large group photo of Democratic interns. That post—drawing a stark contrast to the GOP post—once again proved the exponential power of social media by making over one million impressions, despite Rep. Johnson having only 12,500 followers to begin with. The post had over six thousand shares and over twenty thousand likes.
